Something Genuine: “Honest Liars: The Psychology of Self Deception” 9/11/22

September 12, 2022

In this program, we watched and discussed a selected TEDtalk. A TEDtalk follows a unique format. Speakers at TED events have a maximum of 18 minutes to share their messages, which are delivered in highly polished, succinct speeches. A TEDtalk is delivered by people from all walks of life on a multitude of subjects. A great many of these talks are about the insights gained by ordinary people–insights gained through extraordinary experiences or based on their contemplation of the ordinary events of their lives. Either way, their insights are genuine—not based upon theory or dogma, but through experience.

This Ted Talk is called “What is Love? A Journey Through the Heart”. The speaker was Mia Hansson.

Born to parents from two different continents, Mia grew up and worked in Europe, Africa, and South East Asia. Even while ‘helping’ her nuclear physicist father and geneticist mother at work, Mia had a hunch that there was more to life than science alone. Obsessed with finding the answer to the question of love she traveled through Tibet, studied jungle survival with Bruce Parry in Borneo, worked as a model in Paris, was a journalist in Bangkok, and was a human rights researcher in the Middle East, before going to live for a year at a Zen monastery. Finally, she found the answer – with unexpected results. Now a writer about ‘spiritual life in the real world’ and training to be a counselor, Mia’s work has been featured in the Guardian, the BBC, The Huffington Post, Time Out, and as Editor to the Buddhist Society. She has an MA in Comparative Literature, three postgraduate degrees, and a Millennium Award from Jon Snow.

This group was facilitated by Rev. Saina Fernandez.

This Ted Talk is called “Freedom from the Money Culture”. The speaker was Lynne Twist.

Twist delves into the motivations behind actions that outwardly appear charitable and altruistic, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the morality of money and its uses. The intentions behind the dollar may be worth more than the dollar itself, and it is through a retelling of a powerful memory in garnering donations for hunger alleviation that she shows how money can be used to either help oneself or others. For more than 40 years, Lynne Twist has been a recognized global visionary committed to alleviating poverty and hunger and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. From working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, Lynne’s on-the-ground work has brought her a deep understanding of the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in.

This group was facilitated by Rev. Jacquelyn Eckert.

The title of this Ted talk is “When You Feel the Need to Speed Up, Slow Down” by Kimi Werner.

We often think of extreme athletes as fast-moving and quick-thinking. Champion freediver and spearfisher Kimi Werner explained how actually, sometimes slowing down is the key to survival in the deep. Maui was born and raised champion spearfisher, freediver, artist, and chef-hunter. At any given time, there’s a good chance you’ll find Kimi Werner packing her bags for a new adventure—on land or in the sea. Whether she’s mingling with people from different cultures, learning about an area’s natural resources, or hitching a ride on the dorsal fin of a great white shark, the perennial globetrotter, freediver and spearfisher are always on the move. Born and raised in Maui, Kimi fostered a deep connection to her island home at a very early age. This intrinsic bond with nature became a guiding force in her life, leading her to follow in her father’s footsteps and take up spearfishing and freediving. Renowned for her remarkable ability to hold her breath for more than four minutes to reach depths of over 150 feet, Kimi won every category she entered at the 2008 U.S. National Spearfishing Championships in the dark waters off Newport, Rhode Island. Today, she continues to inspire others as an ambassador of nature, accomplished chef, and professional artist who embodies the heart and soul of simple and sustainable living.

This group was facilitated by Rev. Jacquelyn Eckert.

The title of this Ted talk is “The Power of Vulnerability” by Brene Brown.

Dr. Brené Brown is a researcher professor at the University of Houston, Graduate College of Social Work, where she has spent the past ten years studying a concept that she calls Wholeheartedness, posing the questions: How do we engage in our lives from a place of authenticity and worthiness? How do we cultivate the courage, compassion, and connection that we need to embrace our imperfections and to recognize that we are enough — that we are worthy of love, belonging and joy? Brené is the author of I Thought It Was Just Me (but it isn’t): Telling the Truth About Perfectionism, Inadequacy, and Power (2007) and the forthcoming books, The Gifts of Imperfection (2010) and Wholehearted: Spiritual Adventures in Falling Apart, Growing Up, and Finding Joy ( 2011).
