Movie Discussion Group: “Somewhere in Queens”

Rev. Jacquelyn Eckert facilitated this month’s movie watcher group.

The movie for the month of July will be Somewhere in Queens. The main characters, Leo (Ray Romano) and Angela (Laurie Metcalf) Russo live a simple, blue-collar life in Queens, surrounded by the big personalities of their overbearing Italian-American family. When their lanky, soft-spoken son ‘Sticks’ finds success on his high-school basketball team and a chance at a life beyond what tradition expects because of a basketball scholarship, Leo risks everything when the scholarship becomes jeopardized, including ties with his overbearing Italian-American family, to give his son a shot at a different life.

Somewhere in Queens was also written and directed by Ray Romano.

This movie was chosen because it explores family relationships, the desire to manipulate life in order to achieve desired outcomes, and the often missed invitation to confront fear head-on and, thus, to heal and grow from life itself.

Reflections from the Helen Hamilton Retreat

With this program, we were able to hear firsthand what the live and in-person experience was like for the retreat participants in attendance for the Helen Hamilton Retreat called Abiding in Truth. They shared many transmissions of insights, breakthroughs, or challenges that they encountered along the way of being a part of a full immersion into the Abiding in Truth retreat.

We also heard how much magical, mystical delight there was with their experience of the beauty and nature of the Colorado mountains.

Enlightened Leadership: Building the Foundation ~ “Centering in the Way”

Awakening Together’s President-Minister, Jacquelyn Eckert, and Vice President-Minister, Rhoda Makled share from the Tao as they contemplate its principles in order to fully embody them.

The Tao Te Ching (The Way), written by Lao-Tzu (Old Teacher), is a guide to enlightened leadership. While most people believe effective leadership lies in knowledge and power, the Tao teaches it lies in emptiness, stillness, and presence.

The pair are using three books including interpretations by Derek Lin, Wayne Wang, and Stephen Mitchell. And now they are excited to add Regina’s translation to their contemplations of the Tao and you are invited to join them each Sunday.

This is a great opportunity to share your challenges, growth, and insights about your journey as an Awakening Together Minister. Ideas are shared in a welcoming, inspiring group atmosphere of deep listening and non-judgmental awareness. We would love to hear from you!

If you live in another timezone, here are the time conversions: 1-2:30 pm CT; 12-1:30 pm MT; 11-12:30 pm PT; 7-8:30 pm in the UK and Tuesday, 6-7:30 am in New Zealand & Tuesday, 4-5:30 am in Australia.

Join us this coming Sunday, July 23, 2023, at 1:30 pm ET/11:30 am MT to hear from the recent retreat participants who attended the Helen Hamilton Retreat called Abiding in Truth.

We will get to hear firsthand what the live and in-person experience was like for those in attendance. They will share any transmissions of insights, breakthroughs, or challenges that were encountered along the way of being a part of a full immersion into the Abiding in Truth retreat.

Part of the retreat experience was to have fun in nature and experience the beauty of the Colorado mountains and with that, we will also get to hear firsthand any highlights that the retreatants would love to share.

You are invited to come and listen in and be part of this discussion meant to help us to deepen into the wisdom garnered from the retreat even if you weren’t there physically.

We Are CELEBRATING 10 Years of Awakening Together!

Today, Friday, July 21st, is Awakening Together’s 10th anniversary! Yes, it has been a whopping 10 years! And not one bit of it would have been possible without you. There will be three components to our anniversary celebration.

First, we will commemorate the 10th anniversary with a celebration on Sunday, August 6th at 10:15 am -12 pm ET. There will be a panel of speakers who will give us a first-hand glimpse of what it was like in those beginning days of Awakening Together.

Second, on that date, we will also begin sharing the interview toasts conducted by Julie Butler and Helen Avery. Julie and Helen gave generously of their time and talent by conducting short interviews with Awakening Together members who volunteered to share deeply about how Awakening Together has impacted their lives and spiritual growth.

Third, we are celebrating our 10th anniversary with a picture mosaic created by Saina, our Sanctuary Director. You can celebrate with us by adding your pictures to the mosaic link below in this announcement. This mosaic is a fun, interactive collaboration that allows you to share your most enjoyable memories of Awakening Together. You are invited to create an account with Mosaic and log in so that the pictures you share will indicate that you contributed them. It will be fun to see what images are shared and by whom. Alternatively, feel free to add pictures anonymously if that is more appealing to you.
