Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 167 – NTI 1 Corinthians 8

August 16, 2020

Yesterday’s tip ended with this statement:

As previously mentioned, we let go of a thought by realizing we don’t want it, and the best way to realize what you don’t want is to remember what you do want—your spiritual aspiration.

Today’s reading is about the importance of remembering what you want by focusing on the heart instead of on thinking.

One advantage of Gentle Healing is that we take time each day to focus on the heart through reading, contemplation and meditation. Without this daily focus, we would most likely be slaves of the head instead of servants of the heart.

It is just as Jesus taught when he walked on the shores of Galilee:

Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”

Dependence on the mind is like building a house on sand. Dependence on the heart is like building a house on a foundation of rock.

Thoughts of Awakening # 167

Fear springs forth from judgment,
and fear spawns judgment.
Both are effects
of believing you need control,
and both feed the idea
from which they originally came.

Stories are in the mind.
Truth is in the heart.
Stories have words and reasons.
The Heart provides simple guidance now.

Fear trusts stories,
and stories are based on fear.
The Heart allows and listens and waits.
The Heart trusts truth,
and gently awaits unfolding.

~From our Holy Spirit

Awakening Together Satsang with Rev. Myron Jones

August 16, 2020

Rev. Jones is an ordained minister through Pathways of Light and a student of A Course in Miracles. In this Satsang she was interviewed by George Maddox.

Rev. Jones has this to say about her practice:

“When I first started studying A Course in Miracles, I thought it was very complicated and very hard to do. The longer I practice its principles, the simpler it seems to be. There is still a lot of information that helps me to know why I practice as I do, but the practice itself is what is simple, and the practice is all that matters. The Course is not something to be learned, but something to be lived. Here is the way I live it. I stay as aware as I can of my thoughts because change happens only at this level. If my thoughts are not completely loving, then I know that they need correction. I bring these wrong-minded thoughts to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to correct my thinking and heal my mind. I accept total responsibility for my life. No one is to blame for anything that happens to me. If it is in my life, I put it there. Everything in my life is there for my awakening. If it does not serve God, then it is there to be forgiven. As I forgive, I awaken from the dream to the truth of who I am in God, my perfect self just as God created me. Forgiveness is my purpose.

In forgiving, I am not making error real, but rather I am accepting correction of my perceptions. If I see less than perfect love and complete innocence, then I am misperceiving. I am sorry I projected my errors onto the world and I am willing to withdraw those projections so that I can allow the Holy Spirit to correct them. That is my practice: awareness, forgiveness, correction through the Holy Spirit. This is my way home.”

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 166 – NTI 1 Corinthians 7

August 15, 2020

Here are answers to some questions that might come up as you read today’s reading.

When NTI asks us to empty the shell, what is the shell?

The shell is the person—the apparent human being that is regarded as an individual. When the person is empty, it is a vessel for truth. It is moved by truth, and truth speaks through it. An enlightened one is an empty shell, empty of self and self-will.

What is the difference between letting go and repression?

When a person lets go of a thought, there is a realization that the thought isn’t what is wanted. Since the thought isn’t wanted, it’s let go, just like you might let go of something that is taking up space in your house when you realize you no longer want it. If an idea has been believed to the point that an emotion was created, you’ll also need to rest-accept-trust as the accompanying emotion moves through and out of the body-mind.

When a person represses a thought, there is a fear that s/he is bad for having that thought in the mind. Repression is more like hiding something in a dark corner in the basement of your house, because you don’t want it to be seen. Whatever is stored in the basement is still in the house, taking up space.

By learning to feel the difference  between realization and fear, you can discern if you are letting go of thought or repressing it. If you find you are repressing it, you can realize you don’t want that, and then relax into letting go.

What are points of experience?

As we learned in NTI Romans, ignorance began because we wanted to experience something different than truth. “Points of experience” are illusory thoughts that fulfill that wish by creating emotion.

Let’s look at how points of experience create illusory experience.

Imagine that you are standing with a conveyor belt in front of you. Hundreds of needles are passing by on the conveyor belt. There are several different color needles. There are pink needles, blue ones, gray ones, yellow ones, etcetera. Each needle is standing on end, with the sharp end of the needle pointing up. As the needles pass by, you feel compelled toward some of the needles. When you reach out and touch a needle, it pricks your finger, and you experience the emotion that is associated with that color needle. Eventually, you become addicted to some of the emotions. Even though you don’t like the emotion, you continually touch needles of that same color and continually experience that emotion.

That is how points of experience create illusory experience, except instead of a conveyor belt with different colored needles, we experience illusions that are different from truth by giving attention to thoughts. Thoughts float by, just like needles on a conveyor belt, and we feel compelled to give our attention to some of them, and then we experience the emotions associated with those thoughts.

In order to empty the shell of illusory experiences, we need to see that although we feel compelled to give attention to some thoughts, we aren’t compelled to give them attention. We are free to give attention to a thought or let it go on by, as if on a conveyor belt, regardless of what the thought is. If we’ve already picked a thought up from the conveyor belt, we are free to lay it back down, and it will move on as the conveyor belt moves on.

As previously mentioned, we let go of a thought by realizing we don’t want it, and the best way to realize what you don’t want is to remember what you do want—your spiritual aspiration.

Thoughts of Awakening # 166

Fear comes from wanting
something other than peace.

If you look at your mind
whenever you are feeling fearful,
you will notice
that you are wanting
something other than peace.

And yet,
beyond that wanting
what you really want
is peace that can never be threatened.

Focus your mind on what you truly want
without feeling you know how to have it.

Ask peace
to teach you what peace is.

In assurance
that the Voice of peace will answer,
let go of your thoughts of fear.

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 165 – NTI 1 Corinthians 6

August 14, 2020

Today’s reading asks, “Do you disagree with your brother?”

Whenever you find that you disagree with anyone, it is a good time to practice inquiry. Look to see if you are attached to self-will. Look to see if you need to practice root cause inquiry to discover a hidden motive or belief.

Inner harmony is the sign of an empty shell. Disagreement doesn’t arise out of pure emptiness. That doesn’t mean that emptiness agrees with everyone. Agreement is just another position. Instead of agreeing or disagreeing, emptiness accepts everyone, allows them to be as they are, trusts all things as they unfold and acts intuitively.

Today’s reading also asks, “Do you have thoughts of temptation in your mind?”

A temptation is a desire, craving or impulse to do something wrong or unwise. For our purposes, we can say that a temptation is a desire, craving or impulse that arises from ego conditioning.

It’s helpful to notice how each of us is a slave to ego conditioning. I used to parent by yelling. That’s the first adverse conditioning I chose to transcend. Other examples of conditioning that I actively chose to transcend are the desire for control, poor eating habits and too much TV.

How does one transcend adverse ego conditioning?

  1. Recognize that the habit is contrary to your spiritual aspiration.
  2. Inquire to see if there are false ideas driving the habit. For example, I yelled at Jasmine because of a mind-made law that daughters are supposed to respect (always happily obey) their mothers.
  3. Notice when the temptation arises, and practice rest-accept-trust instead of giving in to it.
  4. Do not judge yourself when you do give in to the temptation, but continue to gently realize your desire to transcend that conditioning. If you do judge yourself, rest-accept-trust with the feelings that arise from judgment.
  5. Be patient and remain lovingly motivated to transcend the ego conditioning you’ve identified.

Thoughts of Awakening # 165

Peace is quiet,
so peace can hear
the quiet Voice of the flow.

Peace can sense love
and follow its trail effortlessly.

Peace knows where to go,
because peace can hear the calling
in the wind.

Peace is gentle and formless.
Judgments are hard and solid.

Judgments say “no” to all things.
Peace only says “yes.”

Following the recent Awakening Together online retreats it has become clear that many feel called to dive into intensive follow-up work. While the practice of unearthing and looking directly at our individual beliefs is primarily solitary in nature, we all recognize that the sharing of that work with others who are undergoing the same process can be enormously beneficial and supportive. This will be a time of sharing our inquiries, insights and challenges, listening to others, or just knowing that we are in community as we find that undefended place within ourselves that longs to be free.
If you feel called to dive deeper into this work, please join us.  All are warmly welcome.

I Am Peace ~ by Rev. David Hemphill

August 13, 2020

I do not have anymore questions inside of me, but I recognize the answers I wrote below and the questions the writings were tacitly inspired from. There was an issue I grappled with for the last 7 years, and I found the answer some weeks ago. The issue: Who am I? The answer: I am Peace. The issue is solved through the following 6 inquiries:

(1) Who are the masters, and what is awareness?;
(2) What mistakes am I making, and how was I created?;
(3) Where is fear, and can fear hurt me?;
(4) What is Peace, and where is it?;
(5) What am I?; and

(6) What is my relationship to my body; Am I the body?

(1) “Who are the masters, and what is awareness?” The masters have all lived before me, each finding supreme Peace in their lives. Peace is an unyielding, untouchable bliss which has existed for eternity. Peace is important because Peace is awareness, and awareness is the lens through which the world is seen. People will always see through their awareness, but when people look out into their inner world of thoughts and beliefs, people become convinced they are their thoughts and beliefs. Millions of people look out of their awareness every day, and those people see their inner thoughts and beliefs. People make the mistake of identifying with those thoughts.

(2) “What mistakes am I making, and how was I created?” I see my mistakes every day. Mistakes are when I place my attention without remembering the lens through which I exist, my awareness, is Peace. Mistakes are important because they created me. When I identify as a thought or belief, I create a personality and a personal history, which I combine to form an identity. Every day, I spend as much time as I can spend in meditation, and I see Peace. However, each day there is time when I am not in meditation, and I make mistakes. I see these mistakes each and every day.

(3) “Where is fear, and can fear hurt me?” I have no fear. Fear is a feeling which arises inside of my body after I have made a mistake. The place fear rises is important, because fear does not arise inside of Peace, but is seen through Peace. Anything which can be seen is always seen by Peace, or awareness. This means even the strongest fear could arise, completely debilitating the body or shattering the identity, but it could never touch Peace. Peace, awareness, is prior to any phenomenon which can arise, and so Peace is untouchable.

(4) “What is Peace, and where is it?” Peace is with me. The Peace which is my awareness is the same Peace which was the awareness of all the masters who have ever lived before me. The Peace unites us, and draws a direct connection between us. Being created entirely and existing entirely through Peace makes Peace the only true, everlasting identity. In my life, Peace is the only immutable truth. In my life, Peace is my everlasting identity. I am Peace.

(5) “What am I?” I am the same Peace each master before me was. The Peace has not changed or altered in any way. I existed then as Peace, and the masters exist now as Peace. Peace is eternal, meaning it always has been and always will be, and infinite, meaning Peace is in every place at every time. My existence is impersonal, not connected to thoughts or beliefs, but to Peace. I am alive now, in the past, in the future, and in all space at all time. I am Peace.

(6) “What is my relationship to my body; Am I the body?” Finally, I am proud of my body, the instrument of Peace. My body is an instrument because it is second to Peace, while Peace is first. The recognition of the relationship between Peace and the body is important because the timeline illustrates how both body and Peace can exist at the same time – how finite and infinite can coexist. Being proud of my body means I love my body and treat it with the utmost regard. Treating my body kindly is crucial because my body is finite, and my body will cease to exist if it is not provided for in love and sustenance. The body is a solider of Peace, fighting every day until the body draws its final breath. In my life every day, my body meditates the most it can and processes emotions the best it can so I may live as a reflection of Peace to myself and to the world. While I make many mistakes every day, I know the body is a solider, and I will never fail because my body will never stop until breathing a final breath, and even then I will live on as the same infinite, eternal Peace I already am, already living as, during all of time.

I am Peace
