During our time together, we will explore what it takes to live from an open, undefended heart. Naturally, any true exploration of living from the heart necessarily entails taking a deep and sustained look at what prevents us from keeping our hearts open. Grounded in the knowledge that the essence of us, our true nature, is the very lovingness within us all, we will explore how to recognize and release egoic energies by cultivating open-hearted awareness practices which support us in directly experiencing our true Self. By leaning into willingness, steeped in self-honesty, and with a consistent dash of courage, we endeavor to open to whatever life brings, as it brings it, that is, on life’s terms. In so doing, we trust that everything – absolutely everything – is here for us to use for healing, for purification, and for learning to live from the heart. We look forward to supporting each other in our individual explorations of how we truly embrace the entirety of this show we call life.

In this program, we watched and discussed a selected TEDtalk. A TEDtalk follows a unique format. Speakers at TED events have a maximum of 18 minutes to share their messages, which are delivered in highly polished, succinct speeches. A TEDtalk is delivered by people from all walks of life on a multitude of subjects. A great many of these talks are about the insights gained by ordinary people–insights gained through extraordinary experiences or based on their contemplation of the ordinary events of their lives. Either way, their insights are genuine—not based upon theory or dogma, but through experience.

This Ted Talk is called “Freedom from the Money Culture”. The speaker was Lynne Twist.
Twist delves into the motivations behind actions that outwardly appear charitable and altruistic, emphasizing the importance of evaluating the morality of money and its uses. The intentions behind the dollar may be worth more than the dollar itself, and it is through a retelling of a powerful memory in garnering donations for hunger alleviation that she shows how money can be used to either help oneself or others. For more than 40 years, Lynne Twist has been a recognized global visionary committed to alleviating poverty and hunger and supporting social justice and environmental sustainability. From working with Mother Teresa in Calcutta to the refugee camps in Ethiopia and the threatened rainforests of the Amazon, Lynne’s on-the-ground work has brought her a deep understanding of the social tapestry of the world and the historical landscape of the times we are living in.

Rev. Yolanda’s guests for the Sounds of Awakening program were The Troubadours of Divine Bliss. They are musicians, inspirational speakers, writers, celebrants, healing guides, retreats, and workshop facilitators. They have a weekly online live concert called, Sundays with Bliss on Youtube and Facebook that invites in joy, light, and love. They are in the process of writing a book about their story that they hope someday will become a film. Their most recent endeavor is a new podcast, “Caravan of the Heart”, that brings together all of their passions and reignites the fire of love in all aspects of living. Rev. Yolanda Mapes is a singer, songwriter, performance artist & interfaith minister, originally from Muscle Shoals, Alabama- The Hit Recording Capital of the World. Rev. Yolanda has been making music professionally for over 35 years, winning the NYC MAC Award twice and being inducted into both the NY Blues Hall of Fame and The GLBT Hall of Fame. Rev. Yolanda and her husband Rev. Glen Ganaway are the founders of the “spiritual happening” called Church With A 2 Drink Minimum. Rev. Yolanda is also a founding member of NYC-based organization, Drag Story Hour NYC.
