Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 327 – GH2 Year 2 Review: Five Steps for the Majority

January 30, 2021

We began Gentle Healing Year 2 by looking at Michael Langford’s Five Steps for the Majority. These five steps emphasize kindness with others—with all  others. Michael recommends these five steps for anyone who wants to experience more light and less darkness in their lives, even if they are not interested in awakening. However, he emphasizes that these five steps are critical if awakening is your goal.

Here’s a review of the Five Steps for the Majority:

1. Every time you speak to a human being either in person or over the phone, make sure the content of what you are saying and the tone of your voice are loving, caring, and kind.

2. Every time you write something to a human being, make sure that what you are writing is loving and kind. Pause before you send someone an email or a text message and make sure that your email or text message is loving, caring and kind.

3. Never do any harm of any kind to any human being or animal.

4. Treat even the people who you think do not deserve your kindness with kindness.

5. Treat even people you only see briefly with great caring and kindness.

When Peace Pilgrim began her spiritual investigation, she noticed that nearly every spiritual culture had a rule similar to “the golden rule.”  Jesus taught the golden rule in the Bible when he said:

So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets. ~ Matthew 7:12

In Jesus’ final teaching to the apostles, just prior to his arrest and crucifixion, he said:

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. ~ John 13: 34, 35

What these spiritual teachings point out is that kindness with one another and with all living things is a way of being that needs to be mastered by the genuine spiritual aspirant.

Here’s our reason for mastering kindness:

Not to be kind is to be a slave to the ego.

It is good to act kind even if you do not feel kind. Restraint from acting based on mental chatter is the first step toward disengaging from mental chatter, just like restraining one’s self from smoking a cigarette is the first step toward quitting smoking. However, restraint on its own isn’t enough.

The second step toward disengaging from mental chatter is rest-accept-trust. Allow the emotions that are covering natural love-peace-joy to rise and pass.

When you have some distance from ego emotion, practice self-inquiry to discover what you believed—what idea(s) you attached to as me  thinking. Question that idea(s) until you achieve clarity with inner wisdom.

Finally, practice Self-inquiry to complete the process; turn attention toward awareness. Recognize your Self, and abide there. (The mantra may help you make this transition.)

Thoughts of Awakening # 327

Resistance is uncomfortable,
so you find yourself willing
to step into an activity or thought
that will minimize resistance.

Minimizing resistance
is suppressing it.
No one heals through
suppressing resistance.

Be willing to rest
and allow resistance,
no matter how difficult
it seems to be.

Allowing resistance
until it dies
is healing.

From our Holy Spirit

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 23

January 29, 2021

Regina’s Tip for Lesson 23

In yesterday’s tip, I shared the loop of experience. That loop is a type of conditioning that runs on autopilot in the brain. It works like this:

We receive thoughts in the mind. Those thoughts are like thoughts we’ve given believing-attention to before. Out of habit, we give believing-attention to those thoughts again, which leads us to see and experience the world in a certain way.

If we want to experience true perception, the perceptual loop of experience needs to be healed, which means it needs to be corrected or put right. Fortunately, today’s workbook lesson gives clear instructions about how we can heal the loop of experience:

  1. “You must learn that it is [attack thoughts] you do not want.”

In other words, you must learn that you want to heal the perceptual loop of experience. It is very good to put effort into increasing your desire to heal this conditioning. You can do that by noticing how much you suffer or by asking questions like, “Is this the world I want to see?”

The mind heals best when it’s given a positive goal. So, as you notice that you don’t want to suffer or don’t want the world you currently see, it’s helpful to restate those realizations as positive goals. For example:

I want freedom, or
I want consistent happiness, or
I want to be the presence of love, or
I want truth realization, etc.

Focus on a positive goal that motivates you to heal the perceptual loop.

  1. “This change requires, first, that the cause be identified and then let go, so that it can be replaced.”The cause is giving believing-attention to attack thoughts when they show up in the mind. Therefore, instead of giving believing-attention, you need to give a different type of attention. That takes us to our next step.
  2. “Hold each attack thought in the mind as you say [the workbook lesson for the day].”One challenge is that conditioning materializes as neural pathways in the brain. Those pathways are like waterslides that enable attack thoughts to slide by quickly without conscious awareness. It’s as if our brain is on automatic pilot, processing attack thoughts with believing-attention whenever they are received.

However, the autopilot can be overridden by awareness. When you hold an attack thought in your mind as you say the workbook lesson, you are overriding believing-attention and giving the thought healing-attention instead.

Look at that for a moment and notice how simple the resolution is:

When an attack thought shows up in the mind, instead of believing it, simply look at it as you repeat the current day’s workbook lesson in your mind.

As it says in NTI Luke Chapter 5:

“Old habits must be let go, for old habits will not usher in a new day. With old habits, all things remain the same. But with new habits, all things are possible. …

“You will catch yourself practicing the old habits, for this has been your way until now. Slipping into old habits does not ruin the new ones. So when you find yourself doing this, forgive yourself your attraction to the old by stepping away from the old and stepping into the new. Each time you do this, you help yourself to unlearn the old and to learn the new.”

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 352

January 29, 2021

What Am I?

Our special theme says in the second paragraph, “Our use for words is almost over now. … The truth of what we are is not for words to speak of nor describe. Yet we can realize our function here, and words can speak of this and teach it, too, if we exemplify the words in us.”

Today I would like to contemplate the first phrase of this excerpt along with the last phrase of the excerpt. That is:

“Our use for words is almost over now … if we exemplify the words in us.”

Another way of looking at this is:

Our time of learning is almost over now,
if we are ready to live from what we’ve learned.

The “IF” is interesting. It means that we need to make the decision to exemplify the teachings. If we make that decision, we no longer need metaphysical education. We’ve received enough metaphysical education. However, if we are not yet ready to live from what we’ve learned, more education is needed.

In other words, the purpose of education is to bring us to the willingness to live the teachings. Once we are ready to live the teachings, education has fulfilled its role.

The Teachings of Inner Ramana makes a similar statement. It says:

“It’s time to go beyond everything you’ve learned.”

Everything you’ve learned has been helpful. It’s been helpful toward willingness to take this next step. But without the step that we are taking together now, all that you’ve learned serves no real purpose toward awakening.

Our first year of Gentle Healing included a lot of learning. We’ve learned:

  • The person that we think we are is not what we are. It is a false self, made up of thoughts, feelings and misperceptions. This false self, typically called the ego, is the cause of all human suffering.
  • The truth of what we are is life-awareness. Awakening is the process of moving from identifying with the false self to knowing our true Self as a permanent direct experience.
  • The desire to know truth is the most important motivator in the process of awakening. Without that desire, we will not apply ourselves toward that end. Therefore, anything we can do to increase that desire is helpful.
  • At the human level, casting our attention on thought creates neural pathways in the brain. These pathways are the source of our habits, beliefs and way of seeing. Resting attention away from thought allows previously formed pathways to dry up, which undoes previously formed habits of thought, feeling, perception and action.
  • Metaphysically, casting our attention on thought feeds energy into the creative principle, which in turn creates all appearances in the world. What we feed into the creative principle also returns to us as another thought or experience. It’s important to remember that like creates like, so focusing on fear creates more fear, focusing on anger creates more anger, etcetera. Unaffectedness (resting attention away from thought and in presence) generates Grace.
  • Inquiry is a valuable tool as we learn to step out of our habituated (conditioned) way of being into a way of being based on clarity. We learned several methods of inquiry including Root Cause Inquiry, Byron Katie’s “The Work,” Diedriek Wolsak’s Choose Again process and self-inquiry as taught in The Teachings of Inner Ramana.
  • There are two awakenings, the first of which is awakening from the self-centered self to a self that reflects truth. A Course in Miracles refers to the first awakening as true perception. What true perception sees is the real world.
  • Abiding as the unaffected self is one key way of permitting the shifts that purify us of the self-centered self and move us toward true perception. Abiding as the unaffected self can be seen as rest-accept-trust as taught by Regina Dawn Akers, never closing the heart as taught by Michael Singer, remaining in noticing presence as taught by Gina Lake or the Loving All Method as taught by Michael Langford.
  • Surrender, as it is taught in The Teachings of Inner Ramana, is a valuable tool as we move away from the self-centered self to movement that is not centered in the self. Surrender allows us to be moved by something other than personal will, so we can live in the world effectively without continuing attachment to our self-centered thinking.
  • We come to know our true Self through focusing on awareness. We learned to focus on awareness using short glimpses throughout the day and through daily, sustained focus using Awareness-Watching-Awareness, Loving Consciousness and Abandon Release methods of meditation.
  • The second awakening is an awakening beyond the self that reflects truth (true perception) to Truth Itself (beyond perception). This is the human’s final awakening, also known as the last judgment, the final end of the ego, manonasa, and nirvana. Beyond this point, there isn’t anything that words can express or mind can imagine. This awakening is the goal of the spiritual path.

We may have learned some other things this year, but these were the main points. These teachings were taught over and over again through different teachers using different words. Hopefully these teachings are now well embedded in our brains.

As our first year of Gentle Healing ends and our second year of Gentle Healing begins, we move from more education to less education and from some practice to living the teachings in all situations. The second year of Gentle Healing will be extremely beneficial, if you live from what you learned in the first year. If you are not ready to live from those teachings, more education is needed. In that case, it is better to go back and repeat the first year of Gentle Healing than it is to continue to the second year.

Repeating the first year of Gentle Healing may feel like being “held back” in the first grade while all of your friends go on to the second grade. However, the reason for holding a student back is to increase the student’s ability to succeed. Without a good foundation, the higher levels are often too challenging for the student—possibly out of reach—and time is wasted. Repeating the first year in order to get a good foundation may be the most effective way for some students to proceed.

I am not a first grade teacher who has the authority to pass first year students or hold them back. I will not make that specific recommendation for anyone. Please let intuition guide you. It may be a matter of whether you applied yourself well to the first year or spent a significant amount of time not applying yourself to our daily lessons and homework. As you review the bullets above, you may know if you effectively digested the education necessary to continue to the second year.

Judgment and love are opposites. From one come all the sorrows of the world. But from the other comes the peace of God Himself.

Please read today’s workbook lesson in full. Notice a phrase, sentence or excerpt that you feel particularly attracted to and go into it more deeply through writing.

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 326 – The Missing Ramana Message

January 29, 2021

Today, we will look at a message regarding these three states of mind:

Resistor– The state of mind when you fully believe the body-mind-personality is what you are.

Doubter– The state of mind when you are learning about truth and questioning everything you believed as resistor. This is most likely the state of mind you are in now.

Abiding– The state of mind when you embrace truth as your reality and live from that instead of from thought.

Today’s message points out that when you ask inner guidance questions, you are identified with the false self. During this stage of the journey, you still think mental chatter is you  thinking, and so you seek wisdom that comes from beyond you. During this stage, which is the doubter stage, you are moving towards abiding and away from resistor, but identification still lies firmly with the false self.

As long as you identify with the false self, going within for guidance and wisdom is wise. However, at some point you will take the step that breaks the attachment to mind. When you break the attachment to mind, you will listen to inner wisdom easily throughout the day without asking questions. Wisdom simply arises and is followed.

The only reason one struggles to follow inner wisdom throughout the day is because she is identified with mental chatter.

In other words:

You always listen to yourself (as you perceive yourself) first.

If you think mental chatter is you, you listen to it first.

If you see yourself as __________ (there is no word to use here), you listen to wisdom throughout the day.

Abiding has no identification, which is why there is a blank in the sentence above. Abiding knows ‘I am,’ but there is no identification like, “I am smart,” or “I am old,” or “I am …

Ideas of identification come from mental chatter, and they aren’t true. They are simply identifying with a thought or an experience; clinging to something temporary, and saying that is what I am. But that can’t be right, because that is something passing, and you are eternal.

You are the blank in the sentence above.

Here is another way of defining the three states of mind:

Resistor– The “I know” and “I’m right” mind. Also known as the ego or false self.

Doubter– The “I don’t know” so “I must seek” mind. Also known as the seeker or spiritual aspirant.

Abiding– The _________ guided by the highest vibration in the moment. Also known as “Self-realized,” although ___________ is a much better descriptor.

Note: If one is identified  with being Self-realized, one is not abiding. More likely, since he allowed this identification to creep in, he is slipping back toward resistor—into “I know” and “I’m right” mind.

Thoughts of Awakening # 326

God cannot be described.
God can be known,
but it cannot be put into words.

It is time now to go beyond words,
to forget words altogether.

Although words may be used
to trigger a glimpse, a memory
or a realization of truth,
it is not the words that teach.

It is experience that teaches,
and it teaches only that
which you already know.

What it teaches is your home,
your reality and
what you are.

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 22

January 28, 2021

Regina’s Tip for Lesson 22
Today’s lesson says, “What I see is a form of vengeance.” As we’ve already learned, what I see comes from thought. Specifically, what I see comes from the thoughts I give believing-attention to. That means if I see attack, I must have given believing-attention to attack in my mind first. That last statement is true, but it might not seem true since thought, perception, and experience are created through a process that works like a loop. A loop has no discernable beginning. It may appear that you see something, have an experience, and then think about what you’ve seen and experienced.

Nevertheless, since thought is the actual beginning of the loop, what you see and experience can change if you change how you give attention to thought.
