Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 284

November 22, 2020

What is the Holy Spirit?

The Teachings of Inner Ramana, The Purpose Of Surrender Part Two, Pages 9-11 says:

“Fear comes simply from not knowing reality. Therefore, the only answer to fear is to let go of what is false and to remember reality as true. Discarding the world is as simple as remembering that it isn’t true. This is as simple as living from within instead of from without.”

One who is forgetting the world takes his cues from within.

“Discarding the world” is the same as seeing that we are unaffected by it. It is the same as being in the world, but not of it. It is also what our special theme means when it says:

If you but knew how much your Father yearns to have you recognize your sinlessness, you would not let His Voice appeal in vain, nor turn away from His replacement for the fearful images and dreams you made.

Although this language is highly symbolic, our “sinlessness” in this context is our unaffectedness. The previous paragraph from our special theme could be translated into less symbolic language in this way:

Your yearning for truth is the yearning to know your unaffected Self, which is your truth. When you realize how strong this yearning is in you, you will cease to listen to ego; you will listen instead to spiritual intuition. You will let spiritual intuition guide you to the realization of your Self. You will stay in the awareness of your Self, and see all things through the lens of truth. In this way, all you will see is truth, and you will rejoice at what you see.

As The Teachings of Inner Ramana says, “This is as simple as living from within instead of from without.”

If we look at the world as a movie or a play, we can also say that it has two directors. One director is the ego. When the actor is too caught up in the play of the world, the ego shouts its directions, and the actor blindly follows. This actor has forgotten that the play is a play and believes s/he is affected by everything that is happening.

The other director is intuition. In order to hear this quieter director, who whispers instructions quietly from within the actor, the actor must remember that s/he wants to hear the director’s instructions. To do this, the actor must be more focused within than on the play. Certainly, there is awareness of the play, but the actor is turned inward to discover what s/he is to say, do, not say or not do as the script of the play unfolds.

I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.

Today’s lesson says, “Loss is not loss when properly perceived. Pain is impossible. … This is the truth, at first to be but said and then repeated many times; and next to be accepted as but partly true, with many reservations. Then to be considered seriously more and more, and finally accepted as the truth. I can elect to change all thoughts that hurt.”

The thoughts that hurt come from the ego. They are thoughts that rise up from the belief that we are affected by the world.

In order to change all thoughts that hurt, we must change directions and directors. Instead of being focused outward, we change direction and focus inward, always inward.

Outward results in fear and suffering.
Inward realizes wisdom, peace and trust.

Remain focused inward today by practicing surrender as it is taught in The Teachings of Inner Ramana.

If you have 30 minutes for meditation, I recommend this meditation today:

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 258 -NTI 2 Peter 2

November 22, 2020

On Day 251, we read stories about Job and Peace Pilgrim. Job and Peace Pilgrim were not confused about what abundance is. In the story about Job, the wrong-mind (represented by Satan) was confused about what abundance is. Since the wrong-mind thought that abundance was found in manifestation, it thought Job would curse God when his manifested abundance was taken away, but Job did not curse God when manifested abundance was taken away. Job continued to praise God, because he knew true abundance.

Today’s reading says:

Teach yourself only that your abundance is now,
without any separation from you,
and you teach yourself everything that is true about you.

Another way to say that is:

Teach yourself that you are  abundance now,
and you teach yourself everything that is true about you.

If you were fully enlightened, there would be no confusion about this. Abundance is what the enlightened know, see and feel. However, the mind’s concepts block one’s awareness of abundance with ideas of lack. Ideas of lack can look like this:

  • I am not good enough.
  • To be good enough, I have to …
  • To feel fulfilled, I have to …
  • I will be happy when …
  • I don’t have enough …
  • I can’t be happy because …
  • You just don’t understand the burden I live with.
  • I need ________ (fill in the blank with a material or experiential idea)
  • Things should be different than they are.
  • Etcetera

Some spiritual teachers say that unhappiness is caused by our belief in lack (& then go on to teach how to attract what you want). It’s true that unhappiness is caused by our belief in lack, but it isn’t caused by our belief in material or experiential lack. Unhappiness occurs because we are unaware of our true nature. One who is Self-realized does not experience lack; that one is happy regardless of his/her material or experiential situation in form.

Today’s reading says:

It is true that there also seems to be something else within you…something that does not seem to be light, but dark…

Whatever you find inside that feels different than divine abundance is an untrue concept about what you are. You know these ideas are untrue, because when you believe them they block natural happiness.

Remember this:

Whenever you are not happy
or content with what is,
you are touching a false concept.

You touch false concepts with attention. Attention feels and experiences, so when you touch a false concept with attention, you feel and experience that concept. It’s like tasting food. When your tongue touches food, you taste it. In the same way, attention tastes the concepts it touches.

Today’s reading says:

It is okay to stand within it for a moment and feel it. But then remember that I have taught you that the judgment comes only from you. Decide in that moment to choose to see your Self truly. Then reach within your mind, and turn on the Light.

Judgment is the decision or declaration that something is real or true.

If you are the one deciding a specific concept is true, you are the one who can choose to decide differently.

You choose to decide differently by removing attention from the concept and placing attention with your true Self—with awareness or existence.

Some people may wonder if today’s teaching is different than rest-accept-trust. It isn’t.

When today’s reading says, “turn on the Light,” it doesn’t mean that you should stop feeling whatever is being felt. It means:

Notice awareness or existence
as you feel a temporary experience.

When you choose to focus attention on awareness or existence during an emotional experience, you make a decision regarding which is true and meaningful. That decision is made by where you place attention.  When you place attention with awareness or existence, you “turn on the Light,” because by placing attention there, you’ve decided that life-awareness is supreme.

Thoughts of Awakening # 258

Stillness is the quiet state of mind;
Only the Heart is speaking.

The Heart is not
the mind.
The Heart is not
what the mind imagines it to be.

The Heart is That
which you know
when you are not listening
to the oh-so-familiar mind.

11/22/2020 ~ Movie Discussion Group: Shawshank Redemption

November 22, 2020

Listen to Recording

Rev. George Maddox facilitated this month’s movie group.

The Shawshank Redemption is based on a novella by Stephen King. Tim Robbins plays Andy, a banker who is sent to prison for the murder of his wife and her lover. The judge who sentences him finds him “a particularly remorseless and icy man.” Andy’s cool reserve and aloofness is not accepted well by the other inmates at Shawshank maximum-security prison in Maine. He is raped by some angry men and given several long stretches in solitary confinement for his bad attitude.

Luckily, Andy is befriended by Red, played by Morgan Freeman, the prison fixer. He is awed by this young man’s quiet reserve and inward resolve to make the best of his bad situation. Andy’s accounting skills come in handy, and he begins doing the taxes for the guards and laundering money for the corrupt warden. This lands him the cushy job of librarian. Eventually, Andy wrangles money out of state officials to build the best prison library anywhere.

Writer and director Frank Darabont draws out strong and intense performances from Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins as soulmates who support each other while doing hard time. Red sees hope as a dangerous thing that can drive a man insane, but Andy believes it is fuel that keeps one going against all odds. Yet, they will both find that hope is not enough. Finally, trust is what will free them both. The Shawshank Redemption is a jubilant tribute to this essential quality of soul.

11-22-20 Weekly Gathering: “The Holy Spirit has No Name.”

November 22, 2020

Weekly Sunday Gathering with Rev. Meg Reinhart

Title: “The Holy Spirit has No Name.”

Description: Rev. Meg Reinhart shared deeply about the paradox that appears on the spiritual journey such as the labels of good and evil within the eternal battlefield of opposition. She helped us to make the connections via the imagery of the ladder. With this ladder there is a way to hold the awareness on how this all pertains to the changelessness of our true nature.

Reading: Rev. Billy Sintiris read an excerpt from The Bhagavad Gita, The Yoga of Arjuna’s Crisis.

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 283

November 21, 2020

What is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is a term that points to spiritual intuition. Yesterday we read about spiritual intuition in an excerpt from The Teachings of Inner Ramana, ‘The Purpose Of Surrender, Part Two’, pages 9-11.  That excerpt said, in part:

“One who listens to guidance … realizes truth even as he experiences perception. He listens to knowledge because he knows that one who sees perception cannot truly see, but one who is not attached can be guided. Non-attachment and realization are one.”

While contemplating our last special theme, we learned about equanimity. Equanimity is abiding in the qualities of Christ-consciousness—acceptance of what is, openness, non-attachment, and unconditional trust.

When we accept that we are consciousness, we abide in equanimity, because we realize we are unaffected by the outside world.

When we abide in equanimity, we are able to feel spiritual intuition more easily, because “one who is not attached can be guided.”

I live in the high desert of Colorado. Tumbleweeds are common here. However, we only see tumbleweeds in the winter. During the summer, tumble weeds are rooted firmly into the ground. The wind cannot blow the tumbleweeds about when they are attached to the ground.

In the winter, the tumbleweed’s roots die. That frees the tumbleweeds from the ground, and then the wind can blow them about freely.

Spiritual intuition is like the wind. When we abide in equanimity, we are like the tumbleweeds in the winter. We allow spiritual intuition to guide us without any attachment to the ground of our thoughts.

This is the goal of the Holy Spirit’s teaching. It is to free us from attachment to our thinking.

Once we are freed from our habitual thinking, we can be guided by spiritual intuition, and the Holy Spirit “becomes the means to go beyond itself, to be replaced by the eternal truth.”

As we’ve already seen, the Holy Sprit is the means to awakening. Once we awaken to truth, we are beyond the Holy Spirit. What we are is the home of the Holy Spirit. Spiritual intuition emanates from awakened consciousness.

Although what we are is the source that spiritual intuition emanates from, until we genuinely awaken to our Self, we do well to be surrendered to spiritual intuition. Through surrender, we let our true voice guide us back to the realization of what we are.

One mistake that people make when they understand intellectually that the Holy Spirit is their true voice, but they don’t have the genuine experience of themselves as consciousness, is listening to the ego thought system while saying, “But the Holy Spirit is me.” In other words, they think their thinking and their will is the same as the Holy Spirit’s thinking and its will.

Your thinking and spiritual intuition are not the same thing. Thinking is the voice of the ego, and it will keep you attached to the idea that you are a person in a body.

If you really want to awaken to your truth, it is critical that you put your own thinking aside and tune into spiritual intuition. Spiritual intuition is the means to awakening, not your thinking. You need to free yourself from the ground of your thoughts in order to genuinely follow spiritual intuition.

My true identity abides in You.

The prayer in today’s workbook lesson begins with, “Father, I made an image of myself, and it is this I call the Son of God. Yet is creation as it always was, for Your creation is unchangeable. Let me not worship idols.”

Most people do not call themselves the “Son of God.” Most people in the world today think of Jesus as the “Son of God.” Yet, they may think of themselves as the children of God.

Why is it an error to think of yourself, the person, as the Son or child of God?

When you think of yourself, the person, as the Son or child of God, you remain identified with yourself as the person. You remain identified with the mind’s thoughts as your thoughts. You are not the person, and the mind’s thoughts are not your thoughts, so the error is a mistake in identification.

It is much more helpful to think of yourself as consciousness, and to realize that consciousness is the Son or child of God. Consciousness is the direct creation or extension of the source.

Nisargdatta Maharaj said:

Keep on remembering: I am neither the mind nor its ideas.  Do it patiently and with conviction and you will surely come to the direct vision of yourself as the source of being—knowing—loving, eternal, all-embracing, all-pervading. You are the infinite focused in a body. Now you see the body only. Try earnestly and you will come to see the infinite only.

Today, we will take Nisargadatta’s advice and “keep on remembering” by noticing repeatedly throughout the day that we are awareness.

We will also practice the Loving All Method today. As we do, we will remind ourselves that the essence of everything is the essence that we are. As our lesson says, “Now are we One in shared Identity, … And so we offer blessing to all things, uniting lovingly with all the world, …”

If you have 30 minutes for meditation, I recommend this meditation today:

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 257 -NTI 2 Peter 1

November 21, 2020

NTI 2 Peter is about abundance. Take a few moments to write down what abundance means to you. If you were to live a life of abundance, what would that look like?

Please complete this exercise before reading the rest of this tip.

~ ~ ~

On Day 136 and Day 202, we learned that the law of attraction is a distortion of truth. Today, we will learn that the ego’s ideas of abundance are a distortion of abundance.

Today’s reading defines abundance as “full awareness of your divine nature.” We often call that awakening or enlightenment. The reading also says, “Abundance cannot be defined in any other way.”

Look at your list of abundance. Are there material ideas of abundance on that list? Are there experiential ideas of abundance on the list?

Whenever the mind tries to define abundance, it thinks about material or experiential ideas. For example, for one personality-type, the mind’s list of abundance might look like this:

– Plenty of money so I am financially secure until my death
– A nice house to live in with beautiful furniture and art work
– A swimming pool, a well decorated meditation room, an art studio
– The time and the money to travel all over the world
– Physical health for me and my family

Today’s reading says that abundance “cannot be defined within the limits of the world.” That means the previous list, or any list of material and experiential ideas, is a distortion of abundance.

If you look at the dictionary definitions of abundance, you will see that none of the definitions use the term “unlimited.” They may say, “a large quantity of” or they may say “ample quantity” or “a relative degree of plentifulness,” but the dictionaries do not define abundance as unlimited.

Any material or experiential idea of abundance is a limited idea  of abundance. Therefore, it is not full, complete or unrestricted abundance.

If you look deep within your heart, you will find that your heart is not interested in limited abundance. The mind is interested in limited abundance, because in the pursuit of or the attachment to limited abundance, you maintain identification with the mind.

The heart is only interested in true abundance, which is abundance beyond all limits and beyond all definitions. It is “full awareness of your divine nature.”  It is abundance that transcends the world entirely.

The reading says:

For this reason, quiet the mind whenever it seems to stretch to imagine abundance within the world. When the mind is stretching in this way it is stretching to limit itself even more.

Those who believe that material or experiential abundance will fulfill them are identified with the temporary body-personality-mind as who they are. That is the limit that mind’s ideas of abundance put on you. The mind’s ideas of abundance limit you  to a temporary manifestation.

Do you want to be limited in that way, or do you prefer to know true abundance as what you are?

The reading also says:

It is through witness that you know. That which you taste as witness cannot be forgotten…

In other words, spend time noticing life-awareness. It is through the direct knowing of your Self that you know your Self. You cannot know your Self through the mind’s concepts, no matter how lofty those concepts might be.

Thoughts of Awakening # 257

Let go of all learned “knowledge” now,
and be guided in trust
by the All.

This is how you become the true Servant.
Without realizing it,
without thinking or “knowing” anything,
you are guided by the Spirit in everyone,
and all needs are provided for
through you.
