Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 277

November 15, 2020

What is the Christ?

Our special theme says, “Home of the Holy Spirit, and at home in God alone, does Christ remain at peace within the Heaven of your holy mind.”

Yesterday we saw that spiritual intuition is the means to truth realization, just like kicking the ball is the way to get the ball in the net in soccer. Just like a soccer player needs to become skilled at kicking the ball, its helpful for a spiritual seeker to become skilled at listening to spiritual intuition.

Our special theme provides a clue that will help us become more skilled at listening to spiritual intuition. It refers to Christ-consciousness as the “home of the Holy Spirit.” It doesn’t refer to human consciousness as its home. This is an important point.

When we are fully identified with human consciousness (the mind), we are fully identified with thought. That means we are identified with chatter about what should be and what should not be, what we like and don’t like, etcetera. These thoughts are not the home of spiritual intuition. They are the home of ego. When we ask for guidance from this place of concern—from wanting things to be a certain way—we invite the ego to chatter even more.

When we identify with Christ-consciousness, or at least with the qualities of Christ-consciousness, we open ourselves to know the guidance of spiritual intuition. Some of the qualities we might identify with are acceptance of what is, openness, non-attachment, and unconditional trust. When we shift our perspective into these qualities, spiritual intuition can become clear, because we have shifted into the perspective that is the home of spiritual intuition.

Let me not bind Your Son with laws I made.

Today’s lesson says, “Your Son is free, my Father. Let me not imagine I have bound him with the laws I made to rule the body. He is not subject to any laws I made by which I try to make the body more secure. … Let us not worship idols, …”

In other words, today’s lesson is an invitation to shift from identifying with the mind—from its ideas of who we are, where our safety lies, what our happiness is, etcetera—to identifying with consciousness (awareness).

Yesterday we noticed what we meant by “I”. That provided us with the opportunity to notice what we are identified with. Today, let’s contemplate what we want to be identified with. Which identification do we feel is in our best interest, the human thinking mind or present awareness-consciousness?

Since today is a day of contemplating what you want, I do not feel to influence you with a particular guided meditation. Instead, I will provide links to gentle background sounds, which you can use as you meditate. You can also meditate in silence.

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 251 -NTI James 5

November 15, 2020

On Day 219, we learned that sin is only forgetfulness. To “sin” is to forget what you are and to act as if you are something different. It is mistaken identity.

The Bible tells the story of a man named Job, who was “blameless and upright.” Job was a lover of truth. He was also a rich man. Everything in manifestation flowed easily for Job. (Job 1, 2)

In the story, the wrong-mind and the right-mind have a figurative conversation as Satan and God. In the conversation, the wrong-mind, which is fixated on manifestation as the source of happiness, tells the right-mind that the only reason Job loves truth is because he has everything a man could want. The right-mind gives permission for the wrong-mind to manipulate the creative principle so that everything the wrong-mind sees as valuable is taken away from Job.

Job loses his wealth, his servants and his children. Although Job falls to his knees in grief when he hears about the death of his children, he cries out:

Naked I came from my mother’s womb,
and naked I will depart.
The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away;
may the name of the Lord be praised.

The wrong-mind, continuing to believe that manifestation is supreme, points out that Job still has a healthy body. Thinking that all men are self-centered, the wrong-mind feels sure that if Job loses his health, he will curse truth.

The right-mind gives the wrong-mind permission to manipulate the creative principle so that Job loses his health. The Bible continues:

So Satan went out from the presence of the Lord and afflicted Job with painful sores from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head. Then Job took a piece of broken pottery and scraped himself with it as he sat among the ashes.

His wife said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”

He replied, “You are talking like a foolish woman. Shall we accept good from God, and not trouble?”

In all this, Job did not sin (forget truth) in what he said.

Job’s heart was centered on truth. One who is centered on truth does not forget truth in the play of manifestation. Truth is of supreme importance to such a one. Reality is his beloved.

As long as we believe, to any degree, that happiness comes from manifestation, we will experience suffering. When we choose to love truth as supreme, manifestation may appear favorable or unfavorable, but it will not affect our heart-centered love of truth.

Here is a story told by Peace Pilgrim. In this story, Peace Pilgrim demonstrates her unwavering love for reality:

I was walking in a very isolated section of the high mountains of Arizona where there was no human habitation for many miles. That afternoon there came a surprising snowstorm, out of season. I have never seen such a storm. If the snow had been rain you would have called it a cloudburst. Never had I seen snow dumped down like that!

All of a sudden I was walking in deep snow and was unable to see through what was falling.

Suddenly I realized that the cars had stopped running. I supposed they were getting stuck on the highway and unable to pass.

Then it got dark. There must have been a heavy cloud cover. I could not see my hand before my face and the snow was blowing into my face and closing my eyes. It was getting cold. It was the kind of cold that penetrates into the marrow of the bone.

If ever I were to lose faith and feel fear, this would have been the time, because I knew there was no human help at hand. Instead, the whole experience of the cold and the snow and the darkness seemed unreal. Only God seemed real – nothing else.

I made a complete identification—not with my body, the clay garment which is destructible—but with the reality which activates the body and is indestructible.

I felt so free. I felt that everything would be all right, whether I remained to serve in this Earth life or if I went on to serve in another freer life beyond.

I felt guided to keep on walking, and I did, even though I couldn’t tell whether I was walking along the highway or out into some field. I couldn’t see anything. My feet in my low canvas shoes were like lumps of ice. They felt so heavy as I plodded along. My body began to turn numb with cold.

After there was more numbness than pain, there came what some would call a hallucination and what some would call a vision.

It was as though I became aware, not only of the embodied side of life where everything was black darkness, bitter cold and swirling snow, but also so close it seemed I could step right into it, of the disembodied side of life where everything was warmth and light.

There was such great beauty. It began with familiar color, but transcended familiar color. It began with familiar music, but transcended familiar music.

Then I saw beings. They were very far away. One of them moved toward me very quickly. When she came close enough, I recognized her. She looked much younger than she had looked when she passed over.

I believe that at the time of the beginning of the change called death, those nearest and dearest come to welcome us. I have been with dying friends who have stepped over and I remember well how they talked to their loved ones on both sides, as though they were all right there in the room together.

So I thought my time had come to step over and I greeted her. I either said or thought, “You have come for me?” But she shook her head! She motioned for me to go back! And just at that exact moment, I ran into the railing of a bridge. The vision was gone.

Because I felt guided to do so, I groped my way down that snowy embankment and got under the bridge. There I found a large cardboard packing box with wrapping paper in it. Very slowly and clumsily in my numb condition, I managed to get myself into that packing box, and somehow with my numbed fingers managed to pull the wrapping paper around me.

There under the bridge, during the snowstorm, I slept. Even there shelter had been provided; but provided also was this experience.

Had you looked at me in the midst of the snowstorm, you might have said, “What a terrible experience that poor woman is going through.”

But looking back on it I can only say, “What a wonderful experience in which I faced death, feeling no fear, but the constant awareness of the presence of God, which is what you take right over with you.”

The stories about Job and Peace Pilgrim are presented for a reason. At some point on the spiritual path, we have to choose what we will be loyal to in our hearts—manifestation or truth. As long as we choose manifestation, Self-realization will remain out-of-reach, because we desire illusion. The Son of God (consciousness) must experience what it wants to experience. That is the essence of freedom.

When we no longer see manifestation as supreme, but choose to align with truth in our hearts regardless of the appearances in manifestation, we are ready for truth realization. Truth realization will come swiftly at this point in your maturity, because you no longer desire anything else.

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 276

November 14, 2020

What is the Christ?

Our special theme says, “Home of the Holy Spirit, and at home in God alone, does Christ remain at peace within the Heaven of your holy mind. This is the only part of you that has reality in truth. The rest is dreams. … The Holy Spirit reaches from the Christ in you to all your dreams, and bids them come to Him, to be translated into truth. He will exchange them for the final dream which God appointed as the end of dreams.”

This excerpt invites us to do two things:

  1. Discern between truth and dreams.
  2. Discern between the right mind (spiritual intuition) and the wrong mind.

I used to think that the right mind was truth. I used to think that the goal of truth seeking was to learn to listen to only the right mind. However, spiritual intuition is not the goal. Spiritual intuition is the means.

Let me share an analogy. Lets imagine that we are children, and we have just joined our first soccer league. Since we are learning to play soccer, the coach spends a lot of time teaching us to kick the ball. Kicking the ball isn’t the goal. The goal is to get the ball in the net. However, kicking the ball is the means of getting the ball in the net, so learning to kick the ball well is important.

Learning to listen to spiritual intuition is like kicking the ball in soccer. Spiritual intuition isn’t the goal, but the means to reaching the goal.

What is truth?

According to our special theme, the truth is beyond dreams; it is even beyond the happy dream. Ultimately, absolute truth is beyond Christ-consciousness.

Notice, again, what our special theme says:

“Home of the Holy Spirit, and at home in God alone, does Christ remain at peace within the Heaven of your holy mind. “

Just as the human experience is within Christ-consciousness, Christ-consciousness is within truth, and that truth is still what we are (“your holy mind”).

It’s pretty amazing. We appear to be human. We are awakening to the realization that we are Christ-consciousness. Yet, our absolute nature is that which makes Christ-consciousness possible.

Ultimate truth, then, is indefinable. Yet, because it is what we are, it can be directly known.

The Word of God is given me to speak.

Today’s workbook lesson says that God’s Word is, “My Son is pure and holy as Myself.”

“Myself” in this sentence is our absolute nature. From our perspective as humans, it is helpful to think of this nature as the source or “Father.” Until we awaken to it, it is helpful to honor it in this way.

“My Son” is Christ-consciousness. From our perspective as humans, it is helpful to begin to notice that Christ-consciousness is what we are. It is our most genuine “I”, our true Self.

Our lesson says, “Let us accept His Fatherhood, and all is given us.”

This sentence points to a shift in our identification. Instead of identifying with the human, who is within Christ-consciousness, we are invited to identify with Christ-consciousness, which is within the source.

Today’s lesson says, “The Word of God is given me to speak.” This is an invitation to speak from Christ-consciousness, to have “I” refer to our consciousness-Self instead of the human-self.

Today, pay attention to what you mean by “I”. Is “I” being used to represent your true Self, or is it being used to represent the false self?

When you notice that “I” in your speaking or thinking points to the false self, silently ask yourself, “What am I?” Look. What is most true about you in your current experience? Are you ready to speak from that truth?

If you have 30 minutes for meditation, I recommend this meditation today:

Gentle Healing 2 ~ Day 250 -NTI James 4

November 14, 2020

Yesterday, we looked at this quote by Nisargadatta Maharaj:

The desire to find the Self will surely be fulfilled, provided you want nothing else. But you must be honest with yourself and really want nothing else. If in the meantime you want many other things and are engaged in their pursuit, your main purpose may be delayed until you grow wiser and cease being torn between contradictory urges.

Sometimes we have strong worldly desires, and it feels like nothing short of sacrifice to let them go. We might want a loving relationship, financial security, a child or grandchild, a home of our own, a home in a dream location, retirement or something else that feels really strong for us.

What are we to do with these desires? Repress them?

Of course not. Repression is never helpful.

Today’s reading recommends looking at desires with unrushed quiet clarity.

What do our worldly desires represent?

I’ve experienced very strong desires other than the desire to awaken. Sometimes, those other desires felt stronger than the desire to awaken. Sometimes, my mind whispered, “When I get that, I will be able to devote more time to awakening.” That thought made a desire feel really strong, because it became a “necessary” prerequisite to awakening.

However, when I looked at any worldly desire clearly, this is what I found:

  • My other desire put awakening off to someday, after I achieved this.
  • I realized that if I achieved this desire, ego would replace it with another desire that had to be achieved as a prerequisite to awakening.
  • I saw that all desires other than the desire to awaken are delays.
  • I saw that no desire other than awakening is final. If one desire is achieved, the mind will replace it with another desire. It is a never-ending path of desire and delay.
  • I realized that any worldly desire comes with new problems to think about and solve.
  • I came to see that any desire but awakening keeps me tied to the world, and therefore tied to my self as this body-mind-personality.

By looking at desires clearly, I was able to let go of even the strongest desires. Interestingly, some of those desires became manifest anyway. They came about on their own without being distractions for me. My awakening did not wait on them. Most likely, they were able to manifest because they ceased to be a distraction. Once they were benign, there wasn’t anything that blocked their manifestation.

(Sometimes when we desire something, we unconsciously desire it because we think we need things a certain way to feel safe, to be worthy, to fulfill lack or for some other wrong-minded reason. What we don’t realize is that by focusing on the desire, we focus on the feeling, “I am unsafe,” or the feeling, “I am unworthy” or the feeling of lack, etcetera. Those ideas can block manifestation of the desired object or circumstance, because unsafe manifests as more perceived unsafe; unworthy manifests as more perceived unworthiness; lack manifests as more perceived lack, and etcetera. When a desire based on a wrong-minded belief is let go, the associated focus on that belief is also let go, which can clear the way for a previous dream to become manifest.)

Of course, I’ve also had desires that haven’t manifested. Since I let them go, they aren’t missed. In fact, if they aren’t totally forgotten, they are seen as unnecessary clutter that was never needed in the first place.

If you would like more help letting go of worldly desires, refer to these tips from Year 1:

Thoughts of Awakening # 250

Listen unto the Heart.
Observe its perfect peace and stillness.
Know knowledge there.

The head makes confusion,
and the Heart delivers a corrective response.

As the head quiets,
the Heart is also still.

Stillness is the natural state of both.
In stillness, separation does not exist.

Seven Steps Contemplation: Resting in Awareness ~ by Rev. David Hemphill

November 13, 2020

“Those who, learning to forget completely all objective knowledge, turn inward firmly and see clearly the truth, abide serene. Those who try to recall forgotten things pine bewildered, fretting over false phenomena.” ~ Ramana Maharshi

Contemplation

Serenity comes from resting in awareness. Resting in awareness is looking inwardly, forgetting objective knowledge. Forgetting objective knowledge is resting firmly with clear truth, rather than using external engagement with thoughts and the world (to attempt to achieve serenity).

Ramana is pointing the reader to practicing awareness watching awareness meditation, or resting in silence, in order to experience serenity. Meditation allows a person to look beyond the mind’s appearing and disappearing thoughts, onward to the awareness aware of the mind. Resting in silence, with attention on awareness, leaves no room for the meditator to place attention on thoughts or other mental movements. Like placing no attention on thoughts or other mental movements, Ramana talks of completely forgetting all objective knowledge. The firm, inward looking suggested is the same as resting in silence.

Ramana is encouraging the reader to avoid using external engagements to find serenity. External engagement is contemplating, changing, persuading, arguing, considering, compromising, or otherwise engaging with thoughts or the external world. Engaging with thoughts and external events results in identifiable effects – for example, writing a pros and cons list to help make a difficult decision has an identifiable effect of placing in text many different considerations. Another example, quitting a stressful job or switching careers has an identifiable effect of ending a stressful trigger, or opening the door to new work opportunities. However, Ramana refers to all engagement with thought or the external world as bewildered pining with false phenomena. Ramana refers to external engagement as pining not because the engagement has no effects, but because external engagement is not meditation – external engagement is not what Ramana identified in the first sentence to be the practice of an aspirant who finds serenity (but meditation is).

To experience, dwell in, be in, abide in, and live in serenity, Ramana points the aspirant to resting in silence, awareness watching awareness meditation, or “turn[ing] inward[ly] firmly and see[ing] clearly the truth.” Ramana advises readers not to rely on interacting with the world (“pin[ing] bewildered” with “forgotten things” by recalling them) to experience serenity, but instead to rest in silence and firmly see truth.

Gentle Healing Year 1 Tip For Lesson 275

November 13, 2020

What is the Christ?

Our special theme says, “Home of the Holy Spirit, and at home in God alone, does Christ remain at peace within the Heaven of your holy mind. This is the only part of you that has reality in truth. The rest is dreams. Yet will these dreams be given unto Christ, to fade before His glory and reveal your holy Self, the Christ, to you at last.”

A dream is defined as “a series of thoughts, images, and sensations occurring in a person’s mind during sleep.”

In today’s excerpt from our special theme, “dream” is an analogy. Certainly, we are not in the human sleep state as we walk about in our daily lives. However, we are still living a dream when we believe we are affected by the “series of thoughts, images and sensations” experienced throughout the day. We are not affected by thoughts, images and sensations, because we are untouched consciousness, the witness of the human experience.

Today, continue to check in with your untouched present nature. Continue to notice that it is more intimately you than anything else you might call you.

God’s healing Voice protects all things today.

Healing is awakening to our true nature.

Today’s lesson says, “Let us today attend the Voice for God, which speaks an ancient lesson, no more true today than any other day.”

What is true today that has also been true on every other day?

Do not look to your mind for the answer to this question. Look to your consistent nature. It is here, present now and “no more true today than any other day. … It is in this that all things are protected.”

The prayer from today’s lesson is:

Your healing Voice protects all things today, and so I leave all things to You. I need be anxious over nothing. For Your Voice will tell me what to do and where to go; to whom to speak and what to say to him, what thoughts to think, what words to give the world. The safety that I bring is given me. Father, Your Voice protects all things through me.

The best way to live this prayer today is to stay focused on our untouched nature. Let the world be as it is. Ask for nothing from the world, and practice surrender as it is taught in The Teachings of Inner Ramana.

If you have 30 minutes for meditation, I recommend this meditation today:
